In These Challenging Times…

How are you? Are you healthy?

We are indeed in challenging times. If you haven’t checked on a loved one (from a safe distance), make sure you do!

Without any pending releases, I’ve been working without a deadline. No deadline means no urgency to my work. I’ve had more days when I didn’t feel like working, and it didn’t bother me.

Until it did.

I noticed I wasn’t getting anything done. So I had to look hard and see what the problem was.

First, my novella for an anthology wasn’t happening. The problem? I hadn’t plotted it thoroughly. I USED TO be a pantser. Then I learned how to plot and outline. For some reason, I can write flash fiction with very little planning. That doesn’t work for novellas. I had to sit down and see where I went wrong.

Then I went into Scrivener and made up a Storyboard comprised of Scenes. Those were assigned to chapters. Hopefully, that solved the problem with Intifida! (Uprising on Torus Prime).

The next issue I have isn’t a real one. It’s more like a sudden interest.

After participating in my first National Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), I decided to write an urban fantasy for the second year. I wrote it, but I wasn’t happy with it. Demonic Descent went on the shelf. Later last year, I had the idea to turn it into a dark fantasy. That meant purging some details, keeping others, and creating new ones.

So I changed the title:

I changed the premise too. In the original, my main character was a young woman who just learned that she was from a magical land and her uncle was a demon king. He wanted to bring her back into his world to help him rule and eventually take over the human world. Kind of bleh… I’ll admit it.

Now the king is a dragon shifter who has one mission in life—take over kingdoms. He’ll consume the power of every magical being he encounters. Long before the main character was born it was prophesied that there would come a day when someone would stand up to the king. She’d end him once and for all. Of course, if she fails, the king would end her and consume her powers.

Complicating matters is a witch who wants the girl’s powers for herself. The evil female has hired a handsome young man to lure the girl into a trap. Of course, he falls in love with the main character and will have to choose between his heart and his duty. Naturally, they have to find the one item in the kingdom that will help the girl end the king.

Before the story took place in an urban city in Washington state. I’ve redirected the story to take place completely in a fictional land complete with knights and castles.

So now I’m doing lots of research:

I’m thinking this might get started during NaNoWriMo 2020 (in November). It will probably take me that long just to get the details in place. I’ve already done the plotting (my goal is 95,000 words). Currently, I’m working on the worldbuilding. Depending upon how long we’re cooped up, I might actually get some miniatures and make a 3D version of the map!

What are you doing to stay busy these days?
