Dash Copeland, an ex-Marine and the main character of Savage Charm, fakes his death and moves to Montmartre, Paris, France. While living there he runs into a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to someone he once knew.
Margaux is a native Parisian. She’s classy and the epitome of a proper French woman. She sees Dash at one of the numerous cafes about Montmartre.
Dash isn’t much for preparing meals, but it’s something that Margaux enjoys. The first meal Margaux cooks is beef bourguignon. She apologizes to Dash as they eat because it was only leftovers!
I love adding food bites to stories. When a character can describe the scent or taste of food, it just helps the story come alive. Writing about food that I’ve never eaten can be problematic. That’s when I turn to the internet and look for actual restaurants with menus. I usually choose meals with flavors that I’ve experienced. If I can’t decipher what it should taste like, I look for reviews.
My inspirational restaurant for Dash and Margaux’s first meal out was at Riv’k restaurant. It’s a varied menu, but I didn’t choose the locale for its food. It was the ambiance that Dash needed as he was remembering where he first saw Margaux.
Many of the restaurants in Montmartre have a rich history. Another spot that I referenced in Savage Charm is the Cafe des Deux Moulins. It is a legendary eatery that is near the Moulin Rouge and the Moulin de la Galette, two historical windmills. The restaurant was featured in the 2001 film Amelie. Margaux orders the meat and cheese plate along with a glass of red wine while Dash can’t stop being an American. He went with the double meat burger with cheese.
Next time we’ll get up close and personal with more French cuisine.
