STORY STARTERS: “The Dragon Slayer”

Welcome to Story Starters

(formerly Story Time Saturday)

These are flash fiction stories. My word count goal is no more than 400 words for each story. I’ll show you the story and a graphic. If you read a story you like, let me know and I can expand it for a future blog post.

This week’s story:

The Dragon Slayer

“The Dragon Slayer”

Xristiana ran the sharpening stone alongside the sword’s edge once again. Better to be sure it’s sharp than have it fail out in the field. Xristiana, Ana to her friends, has never been unprepared. In her short time, serving the Royal Guard, Xristiana has never had a miss. Every swipe of her blade rang true, felling each and every dragon she encountered.

“M’lady, is there anything else you require today?” The short squire asked.

“No, Toby. That’s all. You may retire for the evening.”

The humble servant bowed and left the room.

No sooner had the door closed did Xristiana hear a thud outside her window. She unfastened the latch and threw the wooden shutters wide. A large shadow passed overhead.

“Damn, dragons.” Xristiana sheathed her weapon and rushed from the room.

Dragons were fast, but so was she. Her nimble feet flew down the stone stairs. She didn’t stop until she was in the courtyard. The smell of brimstone surrounded the woman. It was coming from beyond the wall. Night time wasn’t safe outside the castle walls, but Xristiana swore an oath to protect the kingdom. She’d take the chance.

The woods were dark but the scent of the dragon was strong. Xristiana was surprised the trees still stood tall. A limb breaking in the distance grabbed her attention.

“Dragon, show yourself and I’ll make it easy on you.”

“Will you now?” The deep voice came from the shadows.

She gripped the hilt tighter. “I am not afraid. Show yourself. Now!”

A man, dressed in red leathers, stepped from behind a tree. His dark hair hung to his broad shoulders. He was stunning. For a man.

Xristiana returned the sword to her scabbard. “Has anything passed through here?”

The man inched closer. “Not recently. May I offer you my assistance?”

Xristiana looked up at the exceedingly tall stranger. His bright green eyes shone in the darkness. “Who are you?”

He bowed deep. “I am called Kazzas.”

Xristiana’s eyes narrowed. “Where are you from Kazzas?”

“I’m Lord of the Crimson Ridge,” he said proudly.

“Crimson Ridge?” Xristiana’s hand wrapped around her weapon. “That’s the home of dragons.”

“Aye. It is. And I believe you are the one known as the Dragon Slayer.”

A slight tremor shook her hand. “Who are you Lord Kazzas?”

“I would be what you enjoy killing. Tsk, tsk it seems we have a bit of an impasse.”
