Mason Cooley said, “Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are.”
A Center Stage Moment shines a spotlight on writers who give us great places to visit with the characters we love and want to call friends.
Today, I have the pleasure of introducing to you Laura Hawks!
Ms. Hawks has always been interested in writing in some form or other. A few years back, she was involved with and then ran a Star Trek Interactive Writing Group which was successful for a number of years. Yes, she is a trekker and proud of it.
A few years back, she received her Master’s Degree in Ancient Civilizations, Native American History and United States History.
It was at this time she got involved in role playing on Facebook, which gave her ample opportunities to grow and hone her writing ability.
Taking the leap forward, she decided to try her hand at writing a novel. That novel is entitled Demon’s Kiss.
Have you always wanted to be a writer? Actually, no. I wanted to be a teacher. It wasn’t until later that I realized I could teach within my books by putting bits of historical events within the pages of my novels.
Why did you choose to write your genre? I have always been interested in the paranormal world and in mysteries.
What are you currently working on? Book two of my Spirit Walker’s Saga: Shifter’s Pride
What was the hardest story for you to write? The end of the Demon Trilogy: Demon’s Web.
What process do you use to plan your novels? It’s a combination of ideas. Inspiration comes from a wide variety of locations.
Who has been your favorite character to write and why? Clarissa, of the Demon Trilogy. She starts out with a huge chip on her shoulder and I have loved watching her grow throughout her story.
Do any of your characters reflect facets of your personality? Yes. In Flaming Retribution, Kendall is based off of me and my feelings.
Have you ever experienced writer’s block? If so, how did you overcome it? I come across stumbling blocks. I walk away, watch t.v., get something to eat, go out… usually by the next morning when I am just waking up, an answer comes to me.
If you were to choose another genre to write in, what would it be? I have. I just published my first Contemporary Suspense Thriller entitled Flaming Retribution. I also have a non-fiction souvenir photo book on the Balconies of New Orleans.
Which authors inspire you? Graham Masterton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, O’Henry and Jules Verne
What novel would you read multiple times? Dance with the Devil by Sherrilyn Kenyon; The Manitou by Graham Masterson
If you could meet anyone in the world, alive or deceased, who would it be and why? (Person could be a fictional character) Jules Verne. I would love to meet the mind behind those books.
What is your favorite quote?
What is your favorite color? I have three I love equally and especially together… Royal Blue, Royal Purple and Fuchsia.
When you’re not writing… I do a variety of other jobs as well to supplement my income, but writing is my main career.
