We’re back in New Detroit for another chat with someone from the year 2025. Please help me welcome Leon Sieben.
If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do? Ah, it’s been a long time since I’ve had such a day. I’d probably go fishing. I haven’t been to the lake house in years.
What impression do you make on people when they first meet you? Most people see me as a kind-hearted gentleman.
It’s my understanding that you’re the stepfather to Griffin Carter. That’s true.
Can you clarify some things for me? I’ll do my best.
Griffin, Gliese, and Mark are all cousins. Are they close? They haven’t been close in years.
What caused the friction? Griffin and Mark were close until they met a young lady named Gena Hayes. She went to school with Griffin. They started dating after they graduated from high school. There was a misunderstanding between the boys.
What type of misunderstanding? It’s best to let them explain that.
Okay. Now Griffin went to school in Canada? Yes. He spent his senior year in the States.
That’s how he met Gena? Yes.
I’m a little lost here. Griffin and Gena were the same age, 17 at the time. Mark was two years younger. Their friction started while they were in high school? No. After they graduated. Can we discuss something else please?
Let’s talk about Asher Jones. He lived with Griffin for a while? [Leon scrapes a hand across his face.] Yes. Griffin wasn’t happy in Canada so, we let him move back to the States for his last year of school. He lived with his aunt and uncle. After Griffin graduated, he got a job and found a place to stay on his own. When Asher’s grandfather kicked him out of the house, Griffin took him in.
Do you know about your stepson’s role in Mark’s delinquency? I’d rather not talk about that.
So you condone his actions? I never condoned it, but I’m not Mark’s parents nor Asher’s. What those two did is not my concern.
So if it happens to someone else’s kids, it doesn’t bother you? Don’t put words in my mouth. I simply meant that those adults should have taken more of an active role in the lives of Mark and Asher. If they had, those boys wouldn’t have gotten into trouble. End of discussion. If you keep prying, I’m leaving.
Understood. If you could spend the day with someone you admire, who would you pick? I wouldn’t mind spending time with a former colleague, Taa Aoki. She had a great mind. Really a wonderful human.
Had? Yes. She died during the Great Pandemic. Such a waste.
You sound like she was more than just a colleague. We had a moment of weakness. Only happened a couple of times. [He looks down.] Can we talk about something else?
Sure. Is there anything you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t done? What would happen if you did it? Reverse engineer the mandated vaccine. So many people have been damaged by it. Finding a cure would fix destroyed lives.
One of those lives destroyed is that of your stepdaughter. How did the vaccine ruin her life? She had the first round of vaccines. The inoculation was untested. It destroyed part of her brain.
Is that a side effect of the vaccine, or is that how it’s supposed to work? A little of both. [He leans forward.] The vaccine is part of a covert program. The creators eventually redesigned the formulation to target certain types.
How is that possible? It’s too technical for me to explain in a short session. Just trust me that it’s possible.
Tell me about the Network. How did you learn about that?
I have my sources. Is it a splinter group of the Alliance? You know about that, too? To answer your question… yes. The founders of the Alliance had conflicting ideas about how to dethrone the government. When they couldn’t come to an agreement, they split.
And you’re the head of the Network? Can’t answer that.
What’s the worst thing that’s happened in your life? The day the Virus claimed Griffin and Gliese’s mom.
What happened to your first wife? Car accident.
What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done to someone? Next question.
Okay. What’s the most important thing in your life? Righting some wrongs.
Care to explain? I can only say that things aren’t right in this world. They could have been avoided. I need to fix that.
How do you feel about your life right now? What, if anything, would you like to change? There’s plenty I’d change, but I don’t have the ability to bring back the dead.
Anything you care to add? Not that I’m permitted to say. Lady, I have to tell you that your questions are intrusive. You should leave things alone. People will get hurt.
Well, thanks for your words of concern. I do have a job to do.
Join me next time for another Fireside Chat. We’ll be speaking with another character from the future—Gliese Carter.
