Today we’re chatting with another citizen from New Detroit in the future. Please help me welcome Harriet Shepard, Tru’s mother.
Hello Mrs. Shepard!
Please call me Harriet.
Maybe I should call you Gabriela? You really shouldn’t.
Very well, Harriet. Let’s get started.
If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do? I’d spend the day enjoying my family.
Interesting? Why do you say that?
From what I’ve read, you don’t seem like the family type. Sounds to me like you’re being a little judgmental.
What impression do you make on people when they first meet you? Loving and concerned for the well-being of others.
And after people get to know you? I’m a woman willing to make a sacrifice—
Let’s cut the bull, shall we? Your daughter has issues with people lying to her. What part did you play in that? Are you a parent?
Yes. Have you always told the truth?
This isn’t about me. Have you lied to your daughter? Whatever I’ve done, I kept my family safe. Protecting them is all that’s ever mattered to me.
What about your daughter’s happiness? Truly doesn’t know what’s best for her. She believes being a Creative is the key to her happiness.
And you know what will make her happy? Yes. The marriage to Holden Pratt could lead to her happiness.
Marriage to a man she doesn’t love? Sometimes love isn’t enough. Sometimes you have to put it aside and do what’s right.
Is that what you did? Parents sacrifice. I sacrificed my happiness to make sure Tru was safe. I love my child and I want the best for her. The Pratts are the best for her—security, a better way of life. Those things are important in our world. The sooner Tru realizes that, the better she’ll be.
And what about her heart? It will survive. She’ll get over him.
You’re talking about Zared Aoki? [She nods her head.] What do you have against him? Nothing. Tru is better off without him in her life. That family represents bad things in this world. Can we talk about something else?
Fine. What are you most ashamed of in your life? The life I’ve led up to now.
Care to explain? No.
Very well. If you could spend the day with someone you admire, who would you pick? Well, since time travel is possible, I’d like to go back and spend a day with my friend, Taaliba Aoki. There are things I should have said to her.
What happened to her? She died during the Virus.
What Virus was that? It was the Great Ebola Pandemic. People died all over the world.
Wow. Let’s talk about your friend for a minute. Another Aoki? Was she related to Zared? She was his mother. Next question?
Has your life turned out the way you expected? Of course not. I’m a realist. Things happen for a reason. It would have been nice to marry the love of my life and raise a family in comfortable surroundings. It didn’t happen. We learn to move forward.
Is there anything you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t done? What would happen if you did it? Once again, things happen for a reason. In order for me to have the life I wanted, I would have had to destroy the lives of another family. I’m not that type of person.
What’s the worst thing that’s happened in your life? Losing my first love.
What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done to someone? Withheld the truth.
What are you most afraid of? My sacrifices will prove fruitless.
What’s the most important thing in your life? My family. Everything I’ve done has been for my family. Without them, nothing is worth fighting for.
How do you feel about your life right now? What, if anything, would you like to change? I wish Zared Aoki had never entered Tru’s life. We would have lived a quieter, safer life without him.
This has been enlightening to say the least.
Join me next week for another Fireside Chat. We’ll be speaking with another character from the future—Eden Shepard, Tru’s sister-in-law.
